Overview

A weather programme for the regional branches of Telewizja Polska, Poland's public broadcaster, built on Aximmetry with Unreal Engine as the rendering engine.

One frame, three layers

The photograph shows the whole chain at once. On the green screen there is a presenter and nothing else. On the left monitor is the Aximmetry document doing the work - keyers, adjusters, light wrap per camera, billboards, and the numbered camera moves along the bottom. On the right is what the viewer gets: a virtual studio, a map of Poland with the readouts, and a presenter standing on a podium that does not exist. The values on the map are test data from a technical rehearsal.

The light wrap controls are the ones worth pointing at. Keying a person out of green is the easy part; making them look like they are standing inside the rendered room - picking up its colour along their edges - is what stops the result from looking pasted together. That is the difference between a virtual studio and a weather map behind someone.

Why regional rollout changes the brief

A format that has to work across regional branches cannot be a bespoke set built once. It has to be reproducible: the same system, running in different places, operated by different teams, on air on a regular schedule. That pushes the design towards clarity and repeatability rather than one-off visual complexity.

It also sets the performance target. The numbered camera moves in the control panel are preset paths an operator triggers during a live broadcast. They have to run identically every time, at frame rate, with nobody standing by to fix them if they do not.

Scope

  • Design of the weather programme format
  • Implementation on Aximmetry with Unreal Engine
  • Chroma key set-up with per-camera keying and light wrap
  • Preset camera moves for live operation
  • Rollout for regional branches
